PELIGROSA w. MONEY CHICHA at Red 7

Join the PELIGROSA crew third Friday September 21st @ Red 7 for your monthly dose of music from Latin America, the Carribbean and Africa. This month we invite Austin’s own Money Chicha.

Austin’s first chicha group, incorporating the psychedelic sounds of guitars, fuzz, and reverb with heavy percussion, cumbia rythyms and the melodies of Colombia and Peru. Their music is an homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and 70′s that was known as chicha.

Members of Money Chicha also perform with Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, Echocentrics and many others like Greg Gonzalez, Adrian Quesada, Beto Martinez, Matthew “Sweet Lu” Holmes, John Spiece and Leo Gauna.

Chicha is a drink made from fermented corn. Its consumption can lead to you becoming very drunk. It is said that Chicha music is capable of doing the very same!

Chicha is Peru’s equivalent of Tropicalía in Brazil or Afrobeat in Nigeria, a mix of traditional and Western styles. Chicha, which was generally referred to as Peruvian Cumbia until the 80s, is played in the ‘rock band’ format of guitar, bass and drums, though often with a multitude of Latin percussion instruments on hand, as well as keyboards (a practice which has grown due to their low costs and ability to create numerous sounds.)
